The Onward & Upward Family Foundation is proud to introduce the September Institute, a pioneering initiative dedicated to improving the lives of children with intellectual disabilities across South Africa. Our mission is to ensure that these children receive the care, support, and opportunities they need to flourish and reach their full potential.

We would like to share with you the inspiration behind The September Institute and the mission we are working on.

During the pregnancy of our second son, Miles, we discovered that he has Down syndrome.This was an unexpected turn of events, but at the same time, we feel incredibly blessed to have him in our lives. The care and support we have received for Miles here in the Netherlands has shown us how important access to quality care is for a child's development.

However, our strong connection to South Africa has made us aware of the challenges families face there. The care for children with Down syndrome is often limited, and access to quality support is not always available. This disparity in healthcare has inspired us to create The September Institute, with the goal of improving the support for families and children with Down syndrome in South Africa.

At the September Institute, we believe that every child, regardless of their abilities, deserves a future filled with possibilities. We are committed to providing a comprehensive range of services, including education, advocacy, and innovative programs designed to meet the unique needs of children with intellectual disabilities. By equipping parents and caregivers with the necessary resources, knowledge, and community support, we help create an environment where these children can thrive.
